UTI Prevention Tips & Treatment Options

UTI Prevention Tips & Treatment Options

December 21, 2021

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common medical issue that affects millions of people each year. Women are 30x more likely to get a UTI than men, and nearly 50% of women will get at least one UTI in their lifetime. These infections happen when certain strains of bacteria get into the urinary tract, particularly the bladder, urethra, and kidneys.

UTIs typically present with at least one of the following symptoms:

  • Pain or burning upon urination
  • Urge to urinate often
  • Milky, cloudy, or foul-smelling urine
  • Pressure or pain in lower abdomen
  • Feeling weak, tired, or shaky

For many women, getting a UTI is a truly uncomfortable experience, and one that can even turn deadly if the infection has traveled into the kidneys and is left untreated for too long. Thus, good UTI prevention is key. Here are a few basic tips to help you avoid getting a UTI:

  • Stay well hydrated
  • Wipe front to back after using the toilet
  • Always urinate right after sex
  • Drink cranberry juice
  • Avoid harsh/irritating soaps, detergents, or menstrual products
  • Wear clean, breathable underwear
  • Try taking showers instead of baths

If you do end up getting a UTI, don’t panic! You can receive great treatment easily from your local urgent care clinic. First, your urine will be tested to confirm the presence of bacterial overgrowth. Then, your healthcare provider will likely prescribe a round of antibiotics to get rid of the bacteria. During your treatment, you’ll be encouraged to hydrate well and get more rest. According to breast-actives.net, you may also use over-the-counter products like AZO or cranberry supplements to ease your recovery.

A UTI is typically nothing to worry about, but it is smart to seek medical care quickly to avoid any potential complications. The sooner you receive proper treatment, the faster you can feel better!
