Tips to Stay Safe Around Fireworks

Tips to Stay Safe Around Fireworks

July 26, 2023

Fireworks are a popular part of many celebrations and events, but they can also be dangerous if not handled properly. Too many people end up in the emergency room or their local emergency care clinic due to firework injuries each year. It is important to follow some basic safety tips to ensure that everyone stays safe while enjoying fireworks.

Here are some things to keep in mind, to more safely enjoy fireworks this summer!

  1. Always follow the instructions on the fireworks packaging: Each firework is different, and it is important to read the instructions carefully before lighting them. This can prevent accidents and ensure that the fireworks are used as intended.
  2. Keep a bucket of water nearby: In case of a fire, a bucket of water can quickly extinguish flames. It is also a good idea to keep a hose or fire extinguisher handy, just in case.
  3. Never allow children to handle fireworks: Fireworks are not toys and should never be treated as such. Children should always be supervised while watching fireworks and should never handle them.
  4. Only use fireworks outdoors: Fireworks should only be used in open areas, away from buildings, trees, and other flammable objects. Indoor use of fireworks can result in serious injury or death.
  5. Wear protective clothing: Safety goggles and gloves can protect against burns and other injuries. Loose clothing should also be avoided, as it can easily catch fire.
  6. Never relight a “dud” firework: If a firework fails to ignite, do not attempt to relight it. Wait at least 20 minutes before approaching it and dispose of it properly.
  7. Don’t consume alcohol while handling fireworks: Alcohol can impair judgment and coordination, making it more likely for accidents to occur.

By following these safety tips, everyone can enjoy fireworks without risking injury or damage to property. Always be cautious and use common sense when handling fireworks. With a little preparation and attention to safety, fireworks can be a fun and exciting part of any celebration. All of us at DuPage Immediate Care wish you a safe and enjoyable summer!
